That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide

If you have a Guardsman register or grille that’s caked with dust, corroded, or outright broken, we stock Guardsman-compatible replacements and clean existing units as part of a full duct service call. For San Francisco homeowners, a complete register and grille cleaning typically runs $12 to $38 per vent when done alongside a duct cleaning, while full replacement of damaged Guardsman registers usually lands between $40 and $95 per unit installed. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a vent cover that won’t sit flush anymore, visible corrosion blooming around the louvers, or dust streaks on the ceiling radiating from the grille even a week after dusting.

What separates a Guardsman grille from a generic one matters more in San Francisco than almost anywhere else. Coastal air carries salt and moisture that settles into vent openings. A cheaper powder-coated register will blister within a few years here. Guardsman’s finishes hold up longer, but when they do fail, it’s usually the louver mechanism or the mounting frame, not the finish itself.

Which Guardsman Models This Applies To

Guardsman registers and grilles are manufactured in standard North American duct opening sizes, but the compatibility gotcha is that their stamped steel line runs true to nominal dimensions while their extruded aluminum line tends to fit between 1/16″ and 1/8″ tighter than the stated size. That tight tolerance matters in San Francisco’s older housing stock. We’ve walked into Edwardian flats in the Richmond District where a hundred years of settled framing has shifted a duct opening just enough that a brand-new Guardsman register with tight tolerances simply won’t seat without shimming.

The model identification is simple enough. Flip the register over and look for a stamped or etched part number beginning with “GR” for round-neck grilles, “RG” for the register line, or “FG” for floor-mounted units. The number after the letters is the duct diameter or rectangular dimension in inches. If the stamp is corroded beyond reading, measure the actual duct opening, not the old faceplate, because faceplates flare out and will mislead you by half an inch or more.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Guardsman’s own replacements are worth the premium if the grille sits anywhere moisture reaches, which in San Francisco means any vent in a bathroom, kitchen, or west-facing wall. Aftermarket equivalents are fine for interior return air grilles where corrosion isn’t the failure mode. We carry both and we’ll tell you which one makes sense for the location. We’re an independent service provider, by the way, not affiliated with Guardsman. We just work with their products regularly enough to know which ones belong where.

Signs Your Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing

  • Dust streaking on the ceiling or wall around the grille. This means air is escaping around the perimeter instead of through the louvers. The gasket or tape seal behind the register has degraded, or the frame is warped enough to create a bypass gap. Cleaning alone won’t fix this; the seal has to be replaced.
  • Louver blades that won’t hold position. The friction pivots inside Guardsman registers wear smooth over years of adjustment. Once they go limp, air gets directed wherever gravity wants it, which is usually at the floor or straight into the curtains.
  • Visible rust or white oxidation blooming at the corners. In San Francisco this appears first on bathroom and kitchen registers. The zinc or powder coating has been breached, and once moisture gets under it, the corrosion spreads in sheets under the finish where you can’t scrub it away.
  • The register won’t sit flush no matter how tightly you screw it. On floor registers, people drop chairs, toolboxes, and vacuums on the face. The stamped frame bends slightly, the corners lift, and the register becomes a trip hazard, which is a bigger concern in hallways and doorways.
  • Whistling or wheezing at the vent when the blower runs. This is often a dirty register paired with high static pressure, not a failing furnace. The louver spacing and frame openings on Guardsman units are tighter than cheap replacements, so accumulated dust on the louvers restricts airflow and creates that noise faster than you’d expect.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Francisco, expect to pay roughly $12 to $38 per vent for a thorough register and grille cleaning done as part of a full duct cleaning job. Standalone cleaning, where we come out just for the registers, lands between $75 and $150 for the visit depending on how many vents you have. Replacement of a damaged Guardsman register runs $40 to $95 per unit installed, with the spread driven by size, finish type, and whether you want OEM Guardsman or an aftermarket equivalent.

Every quote is one flat price per system, written down before any work begins. That price includes removing the register, cleaning the visible frame and grille, inspecting the duct opening, replacing any failed seal material, and reinstalling with proper fasteners. If you’re replacing, the old register goes with us, the new one gets checked for fit before the screws go in, and you get a written guarantee on the work for 365 days. If a register we installed fails within that window, we come back at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s in writing on every job.

DIY or Call Us?

Register and grille cleaning is genuinely one of the safest air duct maintenance tasks you can do yourself. Pop the register off (most use two screws or a pair of spring clips), vacuum the back of the grille, wipe with a damp cloth, let it dry, and reinstall. For surface dust and ordinary household grime, that’s the job done, and there’s no reason to pay us for it.

Where it goes wrong: soaking a register in water, which strips the lubricant from the louver pivots and invites rust into the stamped steel frames. Also, using abrasive scrubbers on the finish. But the bigger issue we see in San Francisco is homeowners who clean the grille without ever looking at what’s behind it. If the duct opening is lined with years of compacted debris, the clean register will be dirty again within a month. If the frame is bent, corroded, or the seal is gone, you can scrub that Guardsman register until the finish glows and the air will still leak around it. For a straight cleaning on a register that’s in good shape, DIY is fine. For a bent frame, failed seal, or a grille that’s corroded to the point of flaking, call us at (951) 527-6259 and we’ll sort it out properly.
