Aprilaire Register & Grille Cleaning: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide
Aprilaire register and grille cleaning in San Francisco typically runs between $85 and $240 per register depending on the extent of buildup, the register’s size, and whether the grille needs removal for deep cleaning or can be serviced in place. We stock Aprilaire-compatible registers, grilles, and diffusers on the truck and can usually complete a cleaning or replacement during a single visit. Most San Francisco homeowners discover their Aprilaire registers need attention when they notice visible dust trapped in the grille fins, uneven airflow from room to room, or a musty smell that comes and goes with the heating cycle.
The thing about Aprilaire registers in San Francisco is that the city’s coastal air works against them in a specific way. Fog-driven moisture combines with household dust to form a film that hardens inside the grille channels. Once that film sets, normal vacuuming won’t touch it. You need removal, a proper soak or agitation cleaning, and a reinstall that doesn’t damage the register’s mounting points. That’s the job we do, and we price it before we start.
Linden Air Duct San Francisco is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Aprilaire, but we work with their registers and grilles every week, and we know what their products do well and what fails first. Marcus Veale and the crew have been cleaning and replacing Aprilaire registers across San Francisco for years, from Edwardian flats in the Richmond District to newer builds near Mission Bay.
Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To
Aprilaire registers and grilles are built around standardized duct opening sizes, but there’s a catch that trips up a lot of San Francisco homeowners. Aprilaire’s residential line includes registers in 4×10, 4×12, 6×10, 6×12, and 8×12 inch sizes, but their newer models feature a slightly different fin profile than the parts installed in homes built before roughly 2010. The older grilles have wider, deeper fins; the newer ones are shallower and closer together. They look similar at a glance, but they’re not interchangeable without modifying the mounting frame.
To identify your exact part, look for a stamped number on the back of the grille or along the inside edge of the frame. Aprilaire typically stamps a part number starting with a 3-digit prefix followed by a dash. If the stamp is worn off, measure the outside dimensions of the frame in inches, not the opening. That measurement matters more than anything else when matching a replacement.
On OEM versus aftermarket: Aprilaire’s genuine registers use a powder-coat finish that resists the kind of moisture-related corrosion we see regularly in San Francisco’s fog belt neighborhoods like the Sunset and Richmond districts. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist, and we stock both, but if your home sits within a few blocks of the ocean, we’ll recommend OEM every time. The salt air shortens the life of aftermarket finishes noticeably. For dryer inland neighborhoods like Noe Valley or Glen Park, a good aftermarket register performs fine and saves you about 20 to 30 percent.

Signs Your Aprilaire Register & Grille Is Failing
- Persistent dust streaks on the wall above the register. This usually means the grille’s fins are caked with a hardened dust film that redirects airflow upward instead of outward. Cleaning the wall without cleaning the register means the streaks come back within weeks.
- Whistling or rushing noise at certain damper positions. Aprilaire registers with adjustable dampers get noisy when the pivot points wear out or when debris builds up unevenly inside the grille channels. The noise is airflow turbulence, and it won’t go away until the obstruction is removed.
- Uneven temperature between rooms with identical thermostat settings. A partially blocked register in one room forces the system to overcompensate elsewhere. We see this constantly in San Francisco’s older homes, where decades of dust have settled in the grille fins of rooms that don’t get used as often.
- Visible mold or dark spotting on the grille surface. In San Francisco’s damp microclimates, this is more common than most homeowners expect. The grille itself may be cleanable, but spotting on the surface often indicates higher humidity inside the duct run behind it, which is worth checking while the register is off.
- Grille won’t stay in its frame. The mounting clips on older Aprilaire registers fatigue over time, especially with repeated removal for cleaning. Once the clips lose tension, the register rattles during every heating cycle and eventually drops out entirely.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Francisco, Aprilaire register and grille cleaning costs $85 to $160 per register when the grille comes off without complication and can be cleaned with agitation and extraction methods. If the buildup has hardened or the register shows corrosion, replacement makes more sense, and an Aprilaire-compatible replacement register installed runs $120 to $240 per unit depending on size and finish. We put the price in writing before any work begins, every single time.
What’s included in every register cleaning or replacement: removal of the grille, full inspection of the visible duct opening, cleaning or replacement of the register, reassembly, and a check of the damper and mounting hardware. We don’t charge per vent or add surprise line items. The price we quote is the price you pay. If the register needs replacement and you’d rather source the part yourself, we’ll install it for a flat labor rate, but we won’t warranty a part you supply.
Every job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the register cleaning doesn’t hold or the replacement doesn’t fit right, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s in writing on every invoice, not just something we say.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely remove most Aprilaire registers yourself with a screwdriver or by pressing the mounting clips, and a gentle vacuum with a brush attachment takes care of surface dust. What you can’t do safely or effectively is clean the hardened film that builds up inside the grille channels over years of San Francisco coastal air exposure. That requires removing the register, using a degreasing agitation process or professional extraction equipment, and properly re-seating the damper mechanism so it operates smoothly.
The bigger risk with DIY is damage to the register’s mounting frame. Aprilaire registers are built to tight tolerances, and forcing a grille that’s been painted over or warped by moisture can crack the frame or bend the clips. Once the frame is damaged, you’re replacing the boot too, and that’s a ductwork job, not a register swap. If you’re not sure which situation you’re in, call us at (951) 527-6259. We’ll tell you over the phone what you’re likely dealing with, and if we need to come look, the estimate is free.
FAQs
In San Francisco’s coastal climate, expect 10 to 15 years from an Aprilaire register before the finish shows meaningful wear or the damper mechanism loosens. Homes within a few blocks of the ocean in the Sunset, Richmond, or Outer Mission often see corrosion sooner due to salt exposure. Homes in drier neighborhoods like Bernal Heights or Potrero Hill typically stretch that lifespan by several years.
Minor surface corrosion can be cleaned and refinished, but once the metal of the frame or fins has pitted, repair isn’t worth the labor. A pitted register will continue to trap moisture and dust, and the finish will fail again within a season. Replacement is the honest recommendation and usually costs less than you’d expect for an Aprilaire-compatible part.
A single register cleaning typically takes 20 to 30 minutes including removal, cleaning, and reassembly. A full home with 8 to 12 registers takes us most of a morning. Replacement runs slightly longer per register because of the fitting and damper adjustment, but we’re still in and out of most San Francisco homes in under four hours for a full set.
We stock the most common Aprilaire register sizes and finishes on the truck: 4×10, 4×12, 6×10, 6×12, and 8×12 in white and almond. If you have an unusual size or a specialty finish, we can source it quickly from Aprilaire or our supplier network. We also work with registers from Lennox, Trane, and Carrier, but for most San Francisco homes with Aprilaire systems, the correct Aprilaire part is available the same day. Call (951) 527-6259 for a free estimate and we’ll confirm your exact part before we arrive.
